<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some might see the mother&#8217;s strictness as a way to protect others, since she understood how dangerous her daughter could be.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On her way back from shopping in town, Pearl dances with a farm scarecrow and shares a passionate, deep kiss, releasing her pent-up sexual urges. Immediately afterward, she snaps back to reality and laughs at herself, suggesting she understands her own abnormality yet cannot suppress the existence of these uncontrollable impulses.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pearl’s central argument asserts that her story is about the release of preexisting madness, not its slow development. The film focuses on the inevitability of her inner dark impulses.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only did she star in this film, but she also co-wrote the screenplay with director Ty West and participated as a producer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I believe this involvement allowed Mia Goth to successfully imbue the character of Pearl with a multi-layered appeal. The complex characterization—a girl who appears pure and dreamy on the surface yet harbors uncontrollable madness within—was likely only achievable because the performer was also involved in the creative process.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The big scene where Pearl&#8217;s dance fails, and she gives a long speech to her stepsister, Mitzi, really showcases Mia Goth&#8217;s talent. She expresses emotions that start out controlled but slowly build, pulling the viewer in.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Director Ti West pays homage to film history in Pearl. While his earlier film X paid tribute to 1970s low-budget horror, especially The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Pearl brings back the colorful Technicolor look of the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) is a classic psychological thriller starring Betty Davis and Joan Crawford, two Hollywood actresses of yesteryear. Just as that film shows the unraveling of two sisters who were once stars, Pearl focuses on the madness sparked by unfulfilled dreams of stardom. Both stories connect failed aspirations to psychological decline.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The cruel truth depicted in the audition scene</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the film&#8217;s most powerful moments is when Pearl auditions to be a dancer. This scene clearly shows the harsh difference between dreams and reality.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">エンドロールで見せる2分23秒の笑顔は、幸福と狂気、愛と絶望が同居した、パールという人物の本質を象徴しています。涙を浮かべながらも笑い続ける彼女の姿は、観る者の心に深い余韻を残すことでしょう。ただみる人によってはトラウマになるかもしれません。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ミア・ゴスという稀有な才能、タイ・ウェスト監督の映画史への敬意、そして時代を超えて響くメッセージが融合した映画『Pearl／パール』は、ホラー映画ファンだけでなく、すべての映画ファンに観てほしい傑作です。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画「X エックス」を語る上で避けて通れないのが、70年代アメリカン・ニューシネマへの強烈なオマージュです。冒頭、若者たちを乗せたワゴン車が田舎道を走るシーンは、もはや『悪魔のいけにえ』の完コピと言ってもいいほどのざらついた日差し、乾いた風景、そして漂う不穏な空気―トビー・フーパー監督の傑作を追体験するかのような映像体験に、ホラーファンなら思わず身を乗り出してしまうでしょう。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">しかし、本作はただのオマージュ作品ではありません。むしろ、名作ホラーの「逆」を行くカウンター的な作品として機能しているのです。例えば、スタンリー・キューブリック監督の『シャイニング』で印象的だった、ジャック・ニコルソンが斧でドアを破壊するシーン。本作では、閉じ込められた側の女性が内側から斧でドアを破るという逆転の構図を見せます。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">また、ホラー映画でお馴染みの「<strong>ファイナルガール(最後まで生き残る清純な女性)</strong>」というお約束も、本作は見事に裏切ります。（映画「キャビン(<em>The Cabin in the Woods</em>)とか」）</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">画角の変容が語る、映画史そのもの</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画「X エックス」で最も印象的なのが、冒頭のオープニングショットです。保安官が惨劇の現場である一軒家に到着するシーン。カメラは家の中から外を映し出すのですが、その映像は正方形に近いスタンダードサイズで切り取られています。まるで古い映画のよう。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">けれどもカメラがゆっくりと外に向かって進んでいくと、正方形だと思っていた画面が実はドア枠越しに撮られたショットであることが判明します。カメラが外に出ると、ドア枠が広がり、現代的なワイドスクリーンに変容していくのです。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">この演出は、アナログな手法で画角を操るという技術的な遊び心であると同時に、映画のアスペクト比の変遷、つまり映画史そのものを表現しているのです。スタンダードサイズからビスタサイズへ。古い映画から新しい映画へ。そして、16ミリカメラで撮影されるポルノ映画の映像が劇中に挿入されることで、「映画の中の映画」という入れ子構造が完成します。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">この画角の対比は、本作のテーマである「夢と現実」「若さと老い」の対比とも呼応しています。映画という夢の世界に生きる若き女優マキシーンと、現実の老いに苦しむ老婆パール。二人の対比が、画面のアスペクト比という視覚的な仕掛けを通じて巧妙に描かれているのように感じました。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">老いと性欲―この世で最も切ない恐怖（ネタバレあり）</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作が他のスラッシャー映画と一線を画すのは、「老い」と「性欲」というテーマを正面から扱った点です。ジェイソンやマイケル・マイヤーズといった従来の殺人鬼は、謎に包まれた存在でした。しかし本作の殺人鬼、老夫婦のハワードとパールには明確なアイデンティティがあり、私たちはむしろ彼らに共感すらしてしまうのです。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">パールは、若者たちが撮影するポルノシーンを窓からじっと覗き見ています。その瞳には、羨望と嫉妬、そして消えない欲望が渦巻いています。夜、彼女は夫ハワードを誘惑しますが、彼は心臓が弱く、応えることができません。「<em>やりたくないわけじゃないんだ。心臓が&#8230;</em>」という夫の言葉の、なんと切ないことか。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">若さを失い、肉体が衰え、それでも消えない欲望。自分が失ったものを持つ若者たちへの嫉妬。この感情が、殺戮へと転化していく過程は、恐ろしくも哀しく、そして恐ろしいほど人間的です。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">特に印象的なのは、散々人を殺した後、老夫婦が命がけのセックスをするシーンです。前半で若者たちの激しい営みを見せられた後に、この老夫婦の必死な行為を目の当たりにすると、エロティックというより、痛々しささえ感じてしまいます。この対比の残酷さこそ、本作の真骨頂と言えるでしょう。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">映画への愛が紡ぐ、メタホラーとシリーズへの布石</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">驚くべきことに、映画「X」はスラッシャーホラーでありながら、映画制作の楽しさまで描いています。ガソリンスタンドで男優が給油するシーンでは、カメラのフレーミングによって全く異なる意味が生まれることを実演してみせます。監督や撮影クルーが、映画というメディアの魅力に徐々に取り憑かれていく様子も丁寧に描かれており、本作は「<strong>映画についての映画</strong>」としても機能しているのです。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">この二重構造を作り上げたのが、監督タイ・ウエストです。2000年代のマンブルコア・ムーブメントから派生した「マンブルゴア」の旗手として知られる彼は、限定された空間で起こる怪奇と残酷を、スマートに描くことに長けています。過去作『インキーパーズ』での幽霊ホテルものや、西部劇『イン・ア・バレー・オブ・バイオレンス』でのセルジオ・レオーネへのオマージュなど、古典への敬意を払いながら新しい映画を作るという姿勢は、本作にも色濃く反映されています。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">6年ぶりの映画監督復帰作となった本作は、A24初のシリーズ作品の第一章でもあります。ラストで何かに取り憑かれたように踊る老婆パールの姿は、次作『パール』への予告となっています。『パール』は本作の前日譚として、若き日のパールを主人公に据えた作品です。老いた殺人鬼の若き日を描くという逆説的な構造は、『ジョーカー』にも通じるアプローチと言えるでしょう。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">マキシーンに嫉妬し、若さを失ったことへの絶望から殺戮に走ったパール。しかし、彼女の殺人衝動の本当の出自を遡ると、実はそれは老いだけが原因ではなかったのかもしれません。『パール』では、この殺人鬼の誕生の秘密が明かされ、そしてシリーズ完結編『マックスシーン』では、生き残ったマキシーンのその後が描かれます。映画への愛、そして若さと老い、生と死という普遍的テーマを、三部作を通じて多層的に描き出す―これこそが、ウエスト監督が仕掛ける新たなホラーの潮流なのです。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">まとめ：ゆったりとした恐怖が刻む、老いという普遍的テーマ</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画「X」を純粋なスプラッターホラーとして期待すると、やや物足りなさを感じるかもしれません。グロ描写は確かにありますが、決して過激とは言えず、むしろ冒頭に映る牛の死骸の方がグロテスクだったという声もあるほどです。また、惨劇が始まるまでの1時間、ポルノ撮影シーンや老夫婦の不穏な様子を描く前半部は、人によっては冗長に感じられるかもしれません。ホラーファンが求める「血しぶき」という濡れ場が、なかなか訪れないのです。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">しかしながら『X エックス』は、70年代ホラーへの深い愛情と、老いと性欲という現代的なテーマを融合させた、古くて新しいホラー映画です。A24らしい洗練された映像美と、タイ・ウエスト監督の緻密な構成力が、単なるスラッシャー映画を超えた深みを生み出しています。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">老いという誰もが避けられない現実。失われゆく若さへの執着。消えない欲望と衰えゆく肉体との矛盾。本作が描く恐怖は、実は私たち全員がいずれ直面する普遍的なものなのです。血みどろの惨劇の後に残るのは、不思議な寂しさと哀愁です。なぜこんなに残酷な物語なのに、こんなにも切ないのか。この複雑な感情こそが、本作が仕掛けた最大の恐怖かもしれません。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">古典ホラーファンも、A24作品のファンも、そして老いについて考えたいすべての人に観てほしい、挑戦的で野心的な一作です。</p>
