
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Kenneth Branagh version of the Detective Poirot series began with the movie Murder on the Orient Express, which was released in theaters in 2017. Death on the Nile is the second installment of such a series. This film is an adaptation of Agatha Christie&#8217;s original novel. Since it was hinted in the previous Murder on the Orient Express that the following story would take place in the Nile, it is a long-awaited sequel. The choice of this film was quite a challenge, given the prominence of the 1978 film adaptation of the same novel.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Branagh&#8217;s version of Poirot, 2nd</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As mentioned above, the movie Death on the Nile is the second Branagh version of Poirot. What makes this series unique is that Branagh is not only the director but also plays the role of the main character, the famous detective Poirot. Widely known as a Shakespearean actor, Branagh has often directed and acted on stage and screen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Death on the Nile is a great challenge, not only because the original story is one of the most famous in the Poirot series but also because it has been the subject of some outstanding visual productions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Incidentally, Death on the Nile was adapted for the screen in 1978, directed by John Gillamin and starring Peter Justinov (as Hercule Poirot).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I felt that Branagh&#8217;s focus in this film was the depth of the character of Poirot. In &#8220;<em>Murder on the Orient Express</em>,&#8221; I think Poirot is portrayed as slightly softer. Although Murder is not an acceptable act, Poirot was incredibly moved by the motives of the murderers and the way he was unsure of his decision. In contrast, Poirot in this film is a little rough and challenging, and we can see his uncompromising attitude toward this case motivated by his self-interest. He found it difficult to direct and perform the dynamics of this very different character of Poirot. In this way, I could read his intention to express a new image of Poirot.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gorgeous and unexpected casting</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The movie Death on the Nile has attracted much attention for its spectacular casting even before its release. Branagh&#8217;s version of Poirot always features talented actors. It is a tradition to have a spectacular casting each time, and this film was no exception. The casting of Gal Gadot as the beautiful millionaire Lynette and Armie Hammer as her husband, the somewhat seedy Simon, is typical of Branagh&#8217;s skillful use of actors&#8217; images.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, somewhat surprisingly, Emma McKee, who plays the key character Jacqueline in the popular Netflix drama <em>&#8220;SEX EDUCATION,&#8221;</em> is no longer a household name. She has not appeared in many films, and I was apprehensive about casting her alongside actors like Branagh, Gadot, and Hammer, all of whom have worked in major Hollywood films.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I found no need for such concerns after watching the film. Although Mackie was a young actress, her performance with her eyes was incredible, and she radiated a mysterious charm that attracted people to watch her. Branagh also customarily finds a talented actress who has yet to make her mark in the film industry and casts her in an important role. In this film, Mackie was a perfect fit for the role.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stylish and fascinating Poirot</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The film Death on the Nile stands out because of its stylish direction. In this film, there were especially many cuts with fast-paced scene changes. It was too dizzying and complex to understand if you were not concentrating. In particular, the use of dresses was well thought out regarding color, shape, and shadows. The use of vivid colors and light, and the relative use of shadows, is Branagh&#8217;s usual technique. The film shows Poirot&#8217;s emotions and skillfully expresses each character&#8217;s bright and dark sides. In the final scene, the two overlapping figures were made to look like a heart from a distance. It was a very Branagh-esque way to showcase the characters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some other changes from the original work were also very Branagh-like. The main difference is that the melodramatic elements have been increased. There seems to be some controversy about this change, but it was necessary to make Branagh&#8217;s version of Poirot stand out from past works. However, the length of the piece could have been stylishly shortened to draw in a larger audience, as the overall length seems stretched out in the view.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Death on the Nile, the second film in Branagh&#8217;s Poirot series, is led by Branagh&#8217;s new interpretation of Poirot and features an impressive cast of talented actors, each bringing their unique charm to the film. Branagh&#8217;s direction also shines through in many places in this film.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『ナイル殺人事件』は前述に書いた通りのブラナー版ポワロの第2弾になります。このシリーズの特徴は、監督だけでなく主人公の名探偵ポワロ役までブラナーが務めている点です。シェイクスピア俳優として広く知られるブラナーは、舞台や映画でこれまで何度も監督と出演を兼任してきています。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作でブラナーが着目したのは、ポワロというキャラクターの奥行きではないかと感じました。『オリエント急行殺人事件』では、ポワロの少し柔らかな面が描かれていたように思います。殺人は許される行為ではないものの、犯人たちがなぜ犯行に及んだのか、その動機の部分にポワロが大きく心を揺さぶられ、自身の決断に迷うさまが描かれていました。対して、本作でのポワロは少し荒っぽく、己の私利私欲に突き動かされた本件に対しての強靭な姿勢が見て取れたように思いました。このポワロの大きく異なるキャラクターとしてのダイナミックスさを自ら演出し、演じることにやりがいを感じているように思えました。こうすることで、新たなポワロ像を表現したいという彼の意図が読み取れたように思います。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">豪華かつ意外なキャスティング</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『ナイル殺人事件』は公開前からその豪華なキャスティングで話題を集めていました。ブラナー版のポワロは常に実力派の役者を起用し、非常に豪華なキャスティングになるのが毎回の風物詩で、本作も例外ではありませんでした。美しき大富豪のリネットにガル・ガドットを起用したり、その夫でどこか胡散臭いサイモンにアーミー・ハマーを起用したりするあたりは、役者の持つイメージを巧みに利用するブラナーらしさを感じます。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">しかしながら、やや意外だったのは本作のキーパーソンとなるジャクリーンに起用された、エマ・マッキーです。Netflixの人気ドラマ『セックス・エデュケーション』でヒロインを演じる彼女は、決して知名度が低いわけではありません。しかしながら映画への出演歴は多くなく、ブラナーやガドット、ハマーのようにハリウッドの大作映画で活躍してきた俳優たちと肩を並べるには、いささか不安があるキャスティングだと思っていました。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ですが、本編を見てみるとそのような心配が不要であることがよく分かりました。確かにマッキーは若い女優でしたが、彼女の目力の演技はすさまじく、見る人々を惹きつける不思議な魅力を放っていました。実力があるにもかかわらず、まだ映画界では活躍できていない才能を見いだし、重要な役で起用するのもまたブラナー監督のお決まりの手法です。本作ではマッキーが見事にその役にはまったな、と感じました。</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">スタイリッシュに魅せるポワロ</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『ナイル殺人事件』で目を引くのは、やはりスタイリッシュな演出でしょう。本作では特に目まぐるしく場面が変わるカットが多用されていました。少し目まぐるしすぎて、集中していないと分かりづらい部分もありました。特にドレスを使った演出では、色と形、そして影まで考え抜いて演出されていたと思います。ビビッドな色遣いと光、それと相対するような影の使い方は、ブラナー監督お決まりの手法です。ポワロの感情を示すだけではなく、それぞれのキャラクターが持っている明るい面と暗い面を巧みに表現していたように感じます。その上で最後の場面では折り重なる二人の姿が、遠目に見るとハートの形をしているように見える演出が施されていました。これはまさにブラナーらしい魅せ方だと感じさせられました。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">他にも原作からのいくつかの変更点が、ブラナーらしさを演出していたと思います。それは特にメロドラマ的な要素を増やした点は大きな違いでしょう。この変更については賛否両論があるようですが、ブラナー版のポワロとして過去作品と一線を画すためには、必要な変更だったと感じています。ただ、作品時間が全体的に眺めでやや間延びした印象があるので、作品の長さもスタイリッシュに短くした方が、より多くの観客を引き寄せたかもしれません。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ブラナー版のポワロシリーズとして第2弾となった映画『ナイル殺人事件』。ブラナーによる新たな解釈のポワロ像が率いる本作では、豪華な実力派キャストが勢ぞろいし、それぞれの魅力を作品内でいかんなく発揮しています。また、ブラナーらしい演出も随所で光る作品に仕上がっていました。</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Branagh&#8217;s version of Poirot is the third and most challenging minor work.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I remember very well how surprised I was when I learned that the third installment in the &#8220;Branagh Version of Poirot&#8221; series would be &#8220;The Halloween Party.&#8221; Until now, Branagh has dealt with some of the best-known films in the Poirot series, such as &#8220;Murder on the Orient Express&#8221; and &#8220;Death on the Nile. These films are well known to many people, even if they are not part of the Poirot series, and have been made into movies many times. While the title alone has the advantage of attracting an audience, it also has the disadvantage of being easily compared to previous works. Branagh&#8217;s ability to take on such a well-known work was a challenge typical of Branagh, who has taken on William Shakespeare&#8217;s works, which have been performed and filmed many times before.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">His new challenge, &#8220;Halloween Party,&#8221; is a minor entry in the Poirot series. Although it has often been made into a film, it is familiar to some. I was also very concerned about the bold change of the film&#8217;s title to &#8220;Detective Poirot: The Ghosts of Venice. After seeing the film, I was convinced by this change in title and choice of subject matter. There were so many changes from the original story. To indicate the work&#8217;s content, I thought no title could be used other than this one. The director&#8217;s strong intention was evident in the drastic changes made to the story. This film made me realize that this is a film series about the character of the famous detective Poirot, which could only be made at this time after Branagh&#8217;s autobiographical film &#8220;Belfast.&#8221;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mystery and the Paranormal</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This horror-flavored mystery film is perfect for autumn, as can be easily imagined from the original title, &#8220;Halloween Party.&#8221; Since this film was not well advertised as a horror film in Japan, many people were surprised when they read the reviews of other movies they had seen.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The story&#8217;s starting point is that the mistress of the mansion, where the film takes place, reads a medium and conducts a seance. The occult element, which cannot be proven by science, is exactly like water and oil, with detective stories that theoretically prove various mysteries. However, as in &#8220;The Hound of the Baskervilles,&#8221; in which the famous detective Sherlock Holmes appears, mystery and the supernatural combine surprisingly well. This film is one of those, and the way Poirot, who tries to solve things with theories, gets caught up in one supernatural event after another is a great spectacle.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Camera angles and shadows that create horror</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In &#8220;Murder on the Orient Express,&#8221; a murder occurs on a luxury train, and in &#8220;Murder on the Nile,&#8221; a murder occurs on a luxury cruise ship. The search for the murderer is the general flow of the story. In contrast, &#8220;The Ghosts of Venice&#8221; is a kind of psychological thriller with a seance, a dead ghost. Because of this atmosphere, the camera shoots close to the characters&#8217; faces after the scene, looking around the building from the characters&#8217; point of view, always looking at someone. Such is the way of filming.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lighting is generally dark. The beautiful Venice in the early part of the film, which was dimly lit to create a horror element, was shown, so the atmosphere in the early and middle parts of the film is completely different.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gathering of a talented and splendid cast</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the highlights of the Branagh version of the Poirot series is the star-studded cast. In “Murder on the Orient Express,” the most essential character is played by Johnny Depp, who is supported by a cast of talented actors, including the famous actor Judi Dench. In “The Nile Murders,” Gal Gadot plays the most crucial character. A cast of talented actors also supports her.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In “Poirot: The Ghosts of Venice,” Michelle Yeoh, who just won the Academy Award for Best Actress, plays an important medium, and Jude Hill and Jamie Dornan, who played the protagonist and his father in “Belfast,” are again cast as father and son. The casting is impressive, bringing together the best actors in the industry. Perhaps because director Branagh himself comes from a stage background, he placed the right actors in the right roles who could give the necessary performances beyond the level of attention and popularity, allowing the audience to enjoy the film as if they were watching a stage performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Detective Poirot: The Ghosts of Venice is one of those films in which you can feel the weight of its groundedness. I found it a perfect work for those in the mood for a mystery with horror elements.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">第3弾にしてマイナー作に挑んだブラナー版ポアロ</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">「ブラナー版ポアロ」シリーズの第3弾が『ハロウィーン・パーティ』になると知った時、単純に驚いたのを非常によく覚えています。これまでブラナー監督は『オリエント急行の殺人』や『ナイルに死す』といった、ポアロシリーズの中でもトップクラスに有名な作品を扱ってきました。これらはポアロシリーズということを抜きにしても多くの人々に知られた作品で、何度も映像化されてきた作品でもあります。タイトルだけで観客を呼べるというメリットがある反面、過去の作品と比較されやすいというデメリットもありました。このような著名作に挑めるのは、幾たびも上演・映像化され続けているウィリアム・シェイクスピア作品にこれまで何度も挑み続けたブラナーらしい挑戦だな、と感じていました。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">そんな彼が新たに挑んだ『ハロウィーン・パーティ』は、ポアロシリーズの中ではマイナーな部類の作品で、映像化は何度もされているものの、万人が知る作品とは言えません。また、映画のタイトルが『名探偵ポアロ：ベネチアの亡霊』へとかなり大胆な変更がされたのも、非常に気になっていました。実際に映画を観てみて、このタイトルの変更及び題材のチョイスに納得がいきました。原作からの改変が非常に多く、また作品内容を示すためにはこのタイトル以外のタイトルはありえないな、と思いました。物語の大幅な変更には、監督の強い意思が伝わってきました。ブラナー監督の自伝的映画『ベルファスト』を経たこのタイミングだからこそ描ける、名探偵ポアロという人物についての映画シリーズなのだな、ということを本作でまざまざと実感しました。</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ミステリーと超常現象</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作は原作のタイトル『ハロウィーン・パーティ』から想像がつきやすい、秋にぴったりなホラー風味なミステリー作品です。日本ではホラー作品であるという宣伝があまりされていなかったため、実際に他の鑑賞したレビューをみると驚いた方も少なくないようでした。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">物語の起点となるのは、本作の舞台となる屋敷の女主人が霊媒師を読んで降霊会を実施するというもの。科学では証明することのできないオカルト的な要素は、様々な謎を理論的に証明していく探偵ものとはまさに水と油のようにも思えます。けれども、著名な探偵シャーロック・ホームズが登場する『バスカヴィル家の犬』のように、意外とミステリーと超常現象は相性が良と感じます。本作もその類で、理論で物事を解決しようとするポアロが次から次へと巻き起こる超常現象に巻き込まれていく様は、見ごたえがあります。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">更に本作ではホラーらしい仕掛けがたくさん用意されています。例えば、映画の舞台となるのはタイトルの通り「ベネチア」、つまりイタリアなわけですが、ヨーロッパ大陸の国が舞台となるのはイギリスのゴシック・ホラーの定番です。ハロウィーンという時期もまさにホラーにぴったり。加えて、ブラナー監督お得意の鏡や影を用いた演出も本作ではホラー映画の巨匠アルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督をほうふつとさせる形で登場します。魔女のような風貌の霊媒師に、明らかにゴシック様式で建造されたお屋敷。このお屋敷に招かれたのは、秘め事がある子供に正気を失った医者、白衣を纏った女性に、不運な姉弟や元婚約者とミステリー好きにはたまらない要素が多く盛り込まれています。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ホラーを醸し出すカメラアングルと陰影</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">『オリエント急行殺人事件』は豪華列車、『ナイル殺人事件』豪華客船での殺人事件が起こり犯人探しが大まかな流れです。それに対し今作の「ベネチアの亡霊」は、降霊会という死んだ亡霊という一種の<strong>心理スリラー</strong>のようになっています。この雰囲気のため降霊会後は、カメラが登場人物の顔に近い撮り方をしており、人物の視線から建物内を見渡し、<strong>常に誰かを見ている。</strong>そんな撮り方をしています。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>そして照明が全体的に暗いです。</strong>ホラー要素を出すために薄暗い雰囲気の序盤にあった美しいヴェネツィアが映し出されていたので、序盤と中盤以降の雰囲気が全く異なってきます。</p>
