The second film adaptation of the series is Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters. It is based on the second novel in the series, The Adventure of the Devil&#8217;s Sea. The previous film in the series was also met with mixed reviews, and this film has also been met with mixed reviews.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A work full of Greek mythology subplots.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters continues the Greek mythology story from the previous film. While the earlier film featured relatively royal Greek mythological motifs, this film had more core elements than that. The Bermuda Triangle, the &#8220;Devil&#8217;s Sea,&#8221; is the most familiar. Some people would recognize it if it were Cyclops or Cronos. The Golden Fleece and the Pines of Taleia, which were central to the story of this work, were minor. Even if you don&#8217;t know the original Greek mythology, the play explains what these things are all about, so if you don&#8217;t know them, you won&#8217;t be left entirely out of the movie. However, you will enjoy the film more if you know them. Greek mythology is unfamiliar to Japanese people, so the hurdle was a little high.</p>

This part of the story is hard to follow since Greek mythology is not as familiar. There has been a gap since the release of the previous film (2010). There are supplementary explanations, but there is other information that needs to be processed, which hinders immersion in the story.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Powerful visual beauty with a focus on the sea.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is more potent than its predecessor in terms of visual technology, which is part of its charm. In particular, this time around, the title of the film includes <strong>&#8220;The Sea of Monsters,&#8221;</strong> and many ocean scenes appear in the movie. Considering that the main character, Percy, is the son of Poseidon, this is a natural setting. In some films, the images may become too dark in sea battle scenes, making it difficult to understand what is happening. However, this was not the case in this film, making it very easy to watch. Besides the ocean, the CG used to represent the characters and the CG used for the special weapons that appear in the action scenes were very natural and easy to see.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, while the previous film offered an enjoyable fusion of actual scenery of famous cities in the U.S. and a fantastical world created by computer graphics, this film has fewer of these elements. In the sense of differentiation from the previous movie, this film succeeded. However, since the last film had a road movie element, which was an interesting point, this film was a little lacking in this respect.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Growth of distressed protagonists.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The best part of the movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is the growth of the main character Percy and his friends. The film is older than the original to accommodate the age of the cast. It allows the movie to function as a teen drama. By depicting the problems and struggles that teenagers tend to have, the content is more sympathetic. In particular, it is a good point that Percy&#8217;s sense of inferiority, which seemed to have been left out in the previous film, was emphasized in this film. Everyone can relate to the scene in which Percy struggles with the meaning of his existence through an encounter with his half-brother. Also, the problem of having been active only once and not being able to achieve any visible success after that is something that everyone has to deal with, and it is easy to relate to. The storyline of the troubled relationship with the father is also universally accepted.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I also liked the presence of Percy&#8217;s half-brother Tyson, who was newly introduced in this film. I felt the bond between the brothers as they struggled to respond to Percy&#8217;s trust in them despite his unreasonable treatment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I often felt that the overall character portrayal was shallow to keep the film somewhat compact. It made connecting the characters and the audience challenging, and I thought the film&#8217;s climax lacked excitement. Even though the audience was raised to be teenagers, this was not fully utilized in the interpersonal relationships. Also, many of the cast members were too old to be called &#8220;teenagers,&#8221; and a strange sense of calmness did not seem to fit. Since the original story is a five-part series, this film was made with the expectation that there would be a sequel. Still, the ending conveyed to many viewers that this would be difficult.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Summary</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The movie Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is an adventure story that people of all ages can enjoy. The connection to Greek mythology is interesting; in the sea scenes, you can feel the connection between Percy and Poseidon. And many of Percy&#8217;s problems were ones that many could relate to. It is a film that children can safely watch, so I recommend it for a family movie night.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ギリシャ神話の小ネタ満載の一作</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々：魔の海』は、前作から引き続き、ギリシャ神話を題材として物語が展開しています。前作は比較的王道なギリシャ神話のモチーフが登場していましたが、本作はそれに比べるとコアな要素が多かったように感じました。一番親しみやすいのは、「魔の海」ことバミューダ・トライアングルでしょう。サイクロプスやクロノスであれば、ある程度の人が認知していると思いました。本作の物語の中心となった黄金の毛皮やタレイアの松は、少しマイナーかなと感じました。元となるギリシャ神話を知らなくても、これらがいったいどういったものなのかは劇中で説明されるため、知らなければ映画から完全に置いて行かれてしまうようなことはありません。ですが、知っていた方がより楽しめると思います。ギリシャ神話は日本人にはなじみが薄いので、少しハードルが高いように感じました。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">またヘルメスやケイロンなどといったキャラクターを演じるキャストが変更されている点も、物語を分かりづらくしているように感じました。ギリシャ神話としてのなじみが薄いことともあり前作の公開（2010年公開）からも間が空いてしまっているので、ついていきづらい部分かなと思います。補足の説明はありますが、他にも処理しなければいけない情報があるため、物語への没入を阻害する因子になってしまっているように思います。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">海を中心とした迫力の映像美</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々：魔の海』は、映像技術という点では前作を上回る迫力があり、魅力の一つだと感じます。特に今回はタイトルにも「魔の海」が入っていることもあり、海の場面が多く登場します。主人公のパーシーがポセイドンの息子であることを考えれば、自然な舞台設定です。映画によっては、海の戦いシーンだと映像が暗くなりすぎて何が起きているのか分かりづらいことがありますが、本作ではそのようなことがなく、とても見やすくなっていました。海以外にも、キャラクターの表現に使用されるCGや、アクションシーンに登場する特殊な武器で使われているCGが全体的にとても自然で、非常に見やすかったです。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">その一方で、前作ではアメリカ国内の有名都市の実際の景色と、CGで造られたファンタジックな世界の融合が楽しめた一方で、本作ではその要素が少なくなりました。前作との差別化、という意味では成功しています。ただ、前作にはロードムービー的な要素がありそれが面白いポイントでもあったので、本作では少し物足りなさがあるようにも感じました。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">悩める主人公たちの成長</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々：魔の海』の醍醐味（だいごみ）は、なんといっても主人公パーシーや彼の友人たちの成長です。映画では出演者の年齢に合わせて、原作よりも年齢を引き上げています。そのためティーンドラマとして映画が機能するようになっています。ティーンが抱えがちな悩みや葛藤を描くことで、より共感を得やすい内容になっているのではないでしょうか。特に前作では抜け落ちてしまっていたように思う、パーシーの抱える劣等感が本作では印象付けられていたのは良い点だと思います。異母兄弟との出会い（であい）を通じて自身の存在意義について悩む場面は、誰もが共感できるでしょう。また、一度活躍したきりでその後は目に見えた活躍を遂げられていない、という悩みも誰しもが抱えるもので、共感しやすいのではないかなと思いました。父との関係に悩む姿も、万人受けするストーリーラインだと感じました。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作から新しく登場した、パーシーの異母兄弟タイソンの存在も良かったと思います。理不尽な扱いを受ける中で自分を信頼してくれたパーシーの気持ちに応えたい、と奮闘する姿には、兄弟の絆を感じました。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">しかしながら映画をある程度コンパクトにするためか、全体的なキャラクター描写が浅くなりに感じることが多々ありました。そのためかキャラクターと観客の間でのつながりが作りづらく、クライマックスの盛り上がりに欠けたのではないかなと思いまいた。せっかく年齢をティーンに引き上げたにもかかわらず、対人関係の部分ではそれが生かし切れていなかったようにも感じます。またティーンと呼ぶには年齢が上のキャストも多く、妙な落ち着きが見て取れて、なんだかしっくりこない部分もありました。原作が5部作なため本作も続編ありきの作り方をしてはいますが、それが難しいことは多くの観客に伝わってしまうエンディングだったようにも思いました。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The hugely popular fantasy novel Percy Jackson and the Gods of Olympus has enjoyed great popularity since its first book was released in 2005. The first volume of this popular novel, “The Stolen Thunderbolt,” was adapted into the movie Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which was released in 2010 and is the subject of this writing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A coming-of-age story based on Greek mythology</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the title suggests, the movie “Percy Jackson and the Gods of Olympus” is based on Greek mythology, and the story surrounding the main character, Percy Jackson, unfolds. Since it is Greek mythology, famous gods such as Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades appear in the film, and the scenes in which these gods appear in modern clothes in the contemporary American setting are pretty interesting. Furthermore, the demigods, half-human, half-gods that Percy meets at the training camp are also interesting to think about their connection since their parents are Greek gods. Famous demigods in Greek mythology include Hercules, Achilles, and Perseus.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to the gods, there are many creatures from Greek mythology. Percy&#8217;s best friend, Grover, is a satyr, and the training camp leader is a centaur. The enemies awaiting Percy in this game are Greek mythological characters, such as Medusa and Hydra. The highlight of the film is how these characters from Greek mythology adapt to modern America and how they relate to the story.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These elements will make this film enjoyable for those who are familiar with Greek mythology, but those who have little knowledge of Greek mythology may have a hard time understanding it.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The protagonist and his friends cross the United States.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Percy and his friends go from New York to California every degree via New Jersey, Tennessee, and Nevada in this film. This is genuinely a crossing of the United States. Three teenagers cross the United States in one car to enjoy it like a road movie.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The film begins at the Empire State Building in New York City. Percy&#8217;s adventures progress with iconic New York City landscapes, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. New Jersey, the first place they head to after escaping from the training camp, is where they can experience American culture, including sports, music, and theater. Nashville, which follows, is a mecca for country music, a symbol of America. After that is Las Vegas, a prominent casino town. And the final destination is Los Angeles, where Hollywood is located. Through Percy and his friends&#8217; journey, even those of us watching the movie feel as if we are touring the major tourist destinations in the United States.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This adventure is a significant element of the film, as the bond between the friends and Percy&#8217;s powers strengthens. The elements of Greek mythology were nicely involved here with the fishmonger&#8217;s main bullet. Still, the speed was too fast for me to enjoy the journey slowly. I heard it was challenging to combine travel and action in a movie that is about two hours long.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">From Problem Child to Hero</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the highlights of the movie &#8220;Percy Jackson and the Gods of Olympus&#8221; is Percy&#8217;s development as a troubled child in school with ADHD and dyslexia. Percy&#8217;s home environment could be better. Percy&#8217;s mother&#8217;s second marriage was treating him poorly. However, it turns out that Percy&#8217;s father is Poseidon and that ADHD and dyslexia are characteristics of being a demigod. Percy&#8217;s environment changes drastically when he learns of his origins, as he is suspected of stealing Zeus&#8217; lightning bolt and eventually grows up to become a hero.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This plot of a protagonist with ADHD and dyslexia becoming a hero was one of the main reasons why the novel version of the &#8220;Percy Jackson and the Gods of Olympus&#8221; series was so popular. Many people said they were encouraged by the fact that their traits, which they thought were negative, actually turned out to be positive and made them feel special.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chris Columbus directed the film. He is the director of the &#8220;Home Alone&#8221; series, in which a troubled boy turns into a hero who protects his home from thieves in a unique way; &#8220;Harry Potter and the Philosopher&#8217;s Stone,&#8221; the first two films in the &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; series, in which Harry, an abused boy, is a wizard and grows up to be a hero who saves the world; and &#8220;Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,&#8221; in which a young boy is a wizard who becomes a hero. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,&#8221; which he directed and wrote the screenplay for&#8221; Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, I felt the film did not focus on Percy&#8217;s original characteristics, such as ADHD and dyslexia. And I did not get the impression from Logan Lerman, who played Percy, that he was a troubled child. I would like to know if this area has an image gap. The movie &#8220;Percy Jackson and the Gods of Olympus&#8221; is based on Greek mythology. Still, it is a film that allows us to enjoy a great deal of modern American-ness. While it is a fascinating film, you may also glimpse why it is controversial. Why not see it for yourself and speculate?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ギリシャ神話をベースにした青春物語</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画「パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々」は、タイトルからも分かる通りギリシャ神話をベースにしており、主人公であるパーシー・ジャクソンを取り巻く物語が展開されます。ギリシャ神話ですので有名な神々であるポセイドンやゼウス、ハーデスといった神々が登場し、そんな神々が現代のアメリカを舞台に、現代的な服で登場するシーンはなかなかに面白いです。さらにパーシーが訓練所で出会う人間と神のハーフであるデミゴッドたちも、親はギリシャの神々ですから、そのつながりを考えるのも面白いです。ギリシャ神話で有名なデミゴットはヘラクレス、アキレウス、ペルセウスがいます。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">さらに神々だけでなく、ギリシャ神話に登場する生き物たちもたくさん登場します。パーシーの親友であるグローバーはサテュロスですし、訓練所の指導者もケンタウルスです。本作でパーシーを待ち受ける敵たちも、メデューサやハイドラなど、ギリシャ神話にちなんだキャラクターです。このようなギリシャ神話由来のキャラクターたちが現代のアメリカにどのように適応し、どう物語に絡んでいくのかがこの映画の見どころです。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">これらの要素からこの映画はギリシャ神話に親しんでいる人にとっては楽しみやすいでしょうが、反対にギリシャ神話の知識があまりない人にとっては、入り込みづらい部分があるかもしれません。特に、日本ではアメリカほどギリシャ神話が日常になじんでいないので、アメリカ人と比較すると、作品を楽しむハードルが上がってしまっている側面があるかなとも感じました。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作では、パーシーたちはニューヨークからニュージャージー、テネシー、ネバダを経由してカリフォルニア州までの度に出ます。これはまさに、アメリカ横断です。ティーンエイジャー3人が、1台の車に乗ってアメリカ横断するので、ロードムービーのように楽しむこともできました。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">彼らが滞在する場所も、アメリカらしいスポットばかりです。映画はニューヨークのエンパイアステートビルから始まり、メトロポリタン美術館など、ニューヨークの象徴的な景色と共にパーシーの冒険が進んでいきます。訓練所から抜け出して最初に向かうニュージャージーは、スポーツや音楽、演劇などアメリカの文化を感じることができる場所です。続くナッシュビルは、アメリカを象徴するカントリーミュージックの聖地。その後は日本でもカジノの町として著名なラスベガス。そして、終着点はハリウッドのあるロサンゼルスです。パーシーたちの度を通して、映画を見ている私たちまでアメリカの主要な観光地を巡っている気分になれます。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">この旅を通しての冒険が仲間同士の結束が強くなっていき、パーシーの持つ力が鍛えられてもいくところを見られるので、この冒険は作品としても大きな要素だと思います。ここにギリシャ神話の要素がうまく関わってくるのは、魚屋主砲弾と感じましたが、スピード感がありすぎて旅をゆっくりと楽しむことは難しいです。約2時間の映画で、旅とアクションを両立するのは難しいそうでしたね。</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">問題児からヒーローへ</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">映画『パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々』での見ごたえの一つは、やはりパーシーの成長でしょう。ADHDや失読症の特徴を持つパーシーは、学校では問題児扱いされていて、苦しい日々を送っていました。さらにパーシーの家庭環境も良いとはいえません。パーシーの母親の再婚相手からのひどい扱いに耐えている状態でした。ところが、パーシーの父親が実はポセイドンであり、ADHDや難読症はデミゴッドであるが故の特徴であることが分かります。ゼウスの稲妻を盗んだという疑惑をかけられたことにより、自身の出自を知ったパーシーの環境は大きく変わり、最終的にはヒーローへと成長していきます。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">このADHDや失読症を抱えた主人公がヒーローになる、というプロットが、小説版「パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々」シリーズが支持される大きな理由の一つでした。マイナスだと思っていた自分の特徴が、実はプラスに転じ自分は特別なんだ、と感じられて勇気をもらえる、という声が多く上がっていました。</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">本作のメガホンを取ったのはクリス・コロンバス監督です。問題児な少年がユニークな方法で泥棒から自宅を守るヒーローへと転じる映画「ホーム・アローン」シリーズや、虐げられていた少年であるハリーが実は魔法使いで、世界を救う英雄へと成長していく映画「ハリー・ポッター」シリーズの初期2作である「ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石」「ハリー・ポッターと秘密の部屋」を監督と脚本しており、「ハリー・ポッターとアズカバンの囚人」では脚本を担当しています。</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">しかしながら、この映画では原作のパーシーのADHDや難読症といった特徴はあまりクローズアップされていないように感じました。そしてパーシー役のローガン・ラーマンからも、問題児という印象はあまり受けませんでした。この部分に、もしかしたらイメージのギャップがあるのかな、と思いました。 映画『パーシー・ジャクソンとオリンポスの神々』は、ギリシャ神話をモチーフとしながらも、現代のアメリカらしさを存分に楽しむことができる作品です。とても面白い作品である一方で、賛否両論が巻き起こる理由もなんとなく垣間見えるかもしれません。ご自身の目で確認して、推察してみてはいかがでしょうか。</p>
